The dunes between
Schoorl and Petten.

(plm. 40 km.)

I ask anyone to get me a skating tale here. Now you can find the route I skated and a map including the pavement quality.

Route description and info...

I parked just past Sint Maartenszee, next to the road to Callantsoog. This road has a perfect bicycle path, which I followed back in the direction of Sint Maartenszee (and fell there because of a runaway German dog) to begin this skate route. This is a longer version of the Kroonroute "Hondsbossche Duinen" from the TE-Productions guide.

  1. In the village at the roundabout turn right and then cross over to the other side. Immediately turn left in the direction of Petten onto the bicycle path next to the dunes. Beautifully smooth and thus very fast (at least for me). Be careful and pay attention to the side roads that you cross over every now and then.
  2. In Petten, cross over before the roundabout, and turn left onto the straight bicycle path in the direction of Burger(vlot)brug.
  3. In the center of Burgervlotbrug stay on the right, going in the direction of Schoorl or Alkmaar. At first you have a tiled (concrete slabs) surface, and later an asphalt service road.
  4. After a few kilometers, directly across the bridge, it'sbetter if you turn right onto the small road underneath the exit, and immediately left again onto the Hogeweg. This automatically comes back onto the bicycle path next to the N9, but is incomparably better than the skipped piece of road.
  5. Pass the bridge at Schoorldam and turn right onto the red bicycle path down onto the Damweg.
  6. Turn right after a few hundred meters into a small asphalt road in the direction of Petten. at the Y junction turn left towards the the group of houses, and immediately right. Keeping following this road along the outside of the houses until you come to the Oudendijk.
  7. In a left-hand bend, turn left onto the Houtjeslaan.

  8. At the end, at the Voorweg, turn right, cross over (watch out for busy traffic), and immediately left into the Schoutsakker.
  9. After some s-bends you'll come to the Heereweg.
  10. Turn left into it, and a little further on are parking places, and on the right two roads/paths come together. Choose the smallest (= the second) path that goes uphill in the direction of Camperduin.
  11. Follow this path through the dunes, mostly uphill, but sometimes a little downhill as well. You will pass a terrace and plantlife in a quiet setting.
  12. Near the end, the road goes from asphalt to bricks at the upwards-leading beach entrance.
  13. Turn right, grit your teeth, and walk on your skates to the following beach entrance a few hundred meters further. From here it's back to asphalt, of poor quality however.
  14. Turn right at the parking area, and follow this path in the direction of Hargen aan Zee. At the end you'll descend towards Camperduin. You will see the sea and the dyke lying in front of you. The road curves off first to the left and then to the right towards the terraces.
  15. Follow the bicycle path in the direction of Petten, directly behind the high Hondsbossche Zeewering. This path is straight asphalt, wide, and car-free.
  16. Turn right in the direction of Callantsoog or Burger(vlot)brug, just before the village of Petten. It's prefereable to go this way rather than straight through the village, as that road ends in a gravel pit.
  17. Stay on this side of the main road around Petten that you will come up to, turning left onto it towards the round-about. Go over the round-about, taking the second exit to carry on straight ahead.
  18. You're now back on the straight asphalt road from the outward journey. Follow this back to St. Maartenszee.
  19. Cross over the roundabout and turn left into the bicycle path in the direction of Callantsoog weer in, and back to the parking place.
